Yard of the Week: Modern Urban Hippies
Dallas, Texas
This Yard of the Week is gonna go a little differently, because first I need to tell you about the neighborhood. I know, that’s unusual… but then again, so is this neighborhood!
Or… more of a community, really?
It’s called Urban Reserve, and I’d always pass by it biking near White Rock and think, “Oh: this is what happens when modern hippies have some money!”
And that’s not too far from the truth.
It’s an award-winning, sustainable neighborhood of modern, green, eco-friendly homes designed by top architects and nestled into this nature filled setting — but right in the middle of the city!
You can see everyone has these solar panels… and that brings me to the yard I want to show you. The homeowners just had this narrow, patchy strip of grass to work with, but with the help of Covington’s designer Steve Malone, look what they were able to achieve!
It’s a cool mix of modern meets nature— just like the neighborhood it itself, and now all their contemporary widows look out onto this very natural water feature.
I learned a new word — the inventive walls of caged rocks you see in the video are called “Gabion Walls.”
